Slopes are wonderful opportunities to build really great waterfalls. Backyard Concepts was asked to build this water feature into a 4' tall slope that had been shaped into a 3-tier retaining wall. Multiple falls drop into an 12 x 16 pond with all the bells and whistles. The patio snugs right up to the pond making this backyard a tranquil spot to enjoy a quiet evening.

Vivian, our in-house Master Gardener and Aquatic Plant Specialist, has put together a quick how-to class and will demonstrate Winter Care for Aquatic Plants. Please let us know if you will be attending at info@backyardconcept.com. Most Aquatic plants are perennials and will come back year after year. Now is the time to trim most of these plants. There are a few, however, that should be left to die back naturally in order to come back next year and trimming them would actually stunt their ability to come return in the spring. Do you know your pickerell from your pennywort? Bring pictures of Aquatic plants you need identified and we will do our best to sort it out. This compact class will give you the confidence to trim and care for your aquatic plants.

We stumbled on a new product that keeps snakes from entering the pond or any area where snakes are not desired. Snake Proof is a natural powder product that can be used around the outside of the pond, shed or entertainment area or anywhere snakes tend to hang out. SnakeProof is just one in a line of new products for 'critter control'. Solutions for Wasps, Scorpions (very big right now) and Fire Ants are also available.

For us mere humans, the temps mean holidays which usually involves the an abundance of food and the gaining of a few pounds. For KOI and goldfish this means a time for a long winter fast is in order. Since pond fish are cold-blooded creatures their body temps are the same as the water temp and that process slows down digestion dramatically. In fact, some fish experts say that overfeeding in the winter can actual result in poor fish health in the spring. Some pond fish will still eat a bit if it is offered. They are, after all, total pigs most of the time - it is recommended not feed again until the water temps reach 55 degrees. Pond Water Temps Today = 46 degrees.
